You ever notice when EVERYONE knows it, it like saying Impossible or unsinkable or well it can not get any worse? Just Temps Fate to Reach up and beat you head in with a blunt AX Blade.
Out of curiosity, how do they define “Assassins” as applied to members of their organization? I ask because assassination–that is, the act of murdering typically high-profile or high-value humans at the request/instruction of a third party–is an act that requires a breadth of knowledge in multiple disciplines in order to do it right the first time, never mind repeatedly… and William hasn’t (to my knowledge) really displayed that in any of the scenes in which we’ve observed him. If you want to say that he’s not interested in or just not good at archaeology, that’s one thing, but describing him as an idiot and ascribing to him the capacities of a professional killer in the same breath seems like inconsistent characterization.
Excellent question. William and Kimmy both came up through UN Special Forces and the paranormal section has a split focus – powered items and powered people. Specifically, Kimmy took the item recovery path and William took the person removal path. (Meaning extractions and assassinations.) Which, with craft users and vampires is very face-to-face. No “death from above” or long distance rifle shots. He got fed up with it and went to work for his sister at BEE, which is the paranormal version of the FBI, not the CIA. It’s a very different skill set. He’s had basic law enforcement training and, being a craft user himself, focuses on that more than the archaeology side.
William is far from being an idiot, but it’s the one thing Kimmy has always teased him about. And, well, Laila and Joan have learned to join in. Plus, pretending to know less than you do gets people to tell you more than they may have planned to, and may make them underestimate you. If you do it enough, “playing dumb” becomes second nature and even people that know you are smart and capable may forget. And that gives an edge. (Don’t forget that William is damaged goods after seeing his parents slaughtered in front of him as a child. He chose an only slightly different path than Batman.)
Thank you very much for the clarification, I appreciate the time you took to respond. This explains why Kimmy, as part of an International Org., can go to Eridu or Timbuktu or Unspecifiedistan with her “consultant” Laila, while William, as part of a purely domestic Org., stays put in the States.
Also, upon re-reading I found that I was mistaken: In chapter 01 page 22, we do see William acting competently in a combat situation. I’d just kinda forgotten about most of the stuff that happened before Gina took over the art, heh.
yep will, EVERYONE knows it – but your excused since you´re an idiot XD

You can be world expert in something, and still be an idiot in other areas (just look at Bones, no, not Dr McCoy, the other Bones)
