maybe that curse has just worn off? i mean, it has been a freakin´ long time…or daddy is being extra sadistic this time, luring them in a false sense of security, letting them believe that everything is fine – only for the curse to hit when they least expect it, at the peak of their happiness.

Oh? Why is he evil? For making sure there would be very obvious repercussions to her actions? He isn’t human so his standards won’t be human ones. I think the purpose is obvious. He wanted his daughter to learn to control herself and take over a very specific role. It was noted Laila has changed in the last 500ish years. I think the difference is that Laila finally started to show signs of maturity and so her daddy is now using more subtle means to shape her into the role he desired for her. No longer are the gross actions needed to force Laila to learn her lesson.
