Laila was oversimplifying and trying to make William not feel so bad about a demon living in his sister’s body. The Egyptians are over-complicating it.
There is a lot of the the former self left in the body – how to walk and talk, some long-term memories, anything that’s hard-wired. The soul, the piece that leaves the body is very ephemeral.
The demon soul that comes in doesn’t appear to remember their past, but actually it’s that the human mind can’t comprehend their previous experience. The knowledge of their previous self is still with them, they just have little means to access it. So demons live very much in the now, and rely on what the body remembers.
