This scene is a tiny prequel to Acquiesce. And if you remember from that book, she was a representative of Holy Roman Emperor Charles I travelling with Hernán Cortés to conquer the Aztecs and Mayans. She’s dressed as a man because women’s clothes at the time would not have been practical. She would want to look like a kick-ass Conquistador rather than wear frilly dresses. And who would/could tell her no?
There is a huge back-story of this time period that hopefully I can tell one day.
My sense is that Laila is no great respecter of gender roles, loves men and women, and cheerfully dresses as male or female as circumstances and her mood directs. But I’m just the artist… we’ll see what he writer has in store. Stick around!
Was she posing as a man? Or is it that Alternate world history thing?
